Get ready, get set, get planting!
Ok fellow gardeners, as we sit and freeze our buns off, it’s time to start planning for spring!
Have all of your favorite seed catalogs arrived? It’s time to get those orders placed because in a few short weeks it will be time to start some of those seeds! If you hope to grow delphinium from
seed, you should plan on starting as early as February 7th! Onions, parsley, Lisianthus, Sweet William and Violas should also be started in February.
March follows with celery, kale, leeks, lettuce, peas, spinach, foxglove, hibiscus, hollyhock, impatiens, petunias, snapdragons…
The days of April showers brings more seed starting for some of the garden workhorses; basil, beets, broccoli, cauliflower, eggplant, peppers and tomatoes – as well as many more flower varieties!
The warmer May days have us starting corn, cukes, pumpkins, watermelon and sunflowers – oh the happiness of sunflowers!!
If you are new to gardening and aren’t quite sure how to successfully start seeds inside, there are TONS of online resources available just a quick Google search away. Among my favorites are the University of NH Extension and Johnny’s Seeds. They both do extensive research and provide a wealth of knowledge through guides, calculators and well written articles. I constantly find myself learning more and finding solutions to issues I may have encountered the previous season. I’m sure that there are probably other sites that are equally informative, but a New England gardener can’t go wrong starting with either of my favorites.
