🐾 Holiday Home Safety for Pet Lovers
A Home Inspector’s Festive Checklist for New Hampshire Homes
As a home inspector, I see a lot during a typical NH Home Inspection — and during the holidays, one thing becomes very clear: our pets are always part of the action (and sometimes part of the problem).
Between decorations, guests, and winter weather, the holidays can turn even the safest home into an obstacle course for four-legged family members. Here’s how to keep the season merry, bright, and vet-visit free.
🎄 Christmas Trees & Decorations: Temptation at Eye Level
From a pet’s perspective, holiday décor is basically a playground.
Common hazards I warn homeowners about:
Ornaments that shatter easily
Tinsel, ribbon, and ornament hooks (especially dangerous if swallowed)
Tree water with additives that pets may drink
Inspector tip:
Anchor trees securely, skip fragile decorations on lower branches, and assume anything within reach will be investigated.
🔌 Lights, Cords & “Chew Toys”
Holiday lights are cozy. Chewed cords? Not so much.
During many NH Home Inspections, electrical safety is already a top concern — the holidays just add more cords to the mix.
Use pet-resistant cord covers when possible
Keep extension cords off the floor
Unplug decorations when you’re not home
If it looks chewable, it probably is.
🔥 Candles, Fireplaces & Wagging Tails
Open flames and curious pets don’t mix.
Keep candles out of tail-swipe range
Never leave fireplaces or space heaters unattended
Make sure fireplace screens are secure
Fireplaces often look great during an inspection — but that doesn’t mean they’re safe for unsupervised use, especially with pets nearby.
❄️ Winter Entryways Matter in NH Homes
In NH Real Estate, winter conditions are part of daily life.
A few pet-friendly reminders:
Clear ice and snow from walkways
Use pet-safe ice melt
Dry paws to avoid slipping on smooth floors
Many winter injuries happen right at the front door — for people and pets alike.
🏠 A Home Inspector’s Final Holiday Thought
The holidays should be joyful, not stressful. Most seasonal hazards I see during an NH Home Inspection are simple to prevent — especially when pets are involved.
Whether you’re buying, selling, or simply enjoying your home this season, a little awareness goes a long way toward keeping everyone safe.
From a home inspector who’s seen more than one Christmas tree lose a battle with a dog or cat — here’s wishing you a happy, healthy, and pet-safe holiday season across NH Real Estate.
